8 tricks to always put a smile on your face
Updated: Aug 14, 2020
This is surreal.
When I came with the idea to write this post, I was doing alright even though my sweet puppy was very sick and not herself.
I had hope that she would do just fine and that God would give her strength but, it didn't quite happen like that and I get it. I told God that whatever the outcome would be, I would still stand faithful to Him and I am.
The thing is, God never promised that losing someone, even a puppy, would be a painless thing.
I cried the day before it happened and, on August 10th, I cried when the gentleman that takes care of the dogs for us said that she had passed away.
At first, I thought he was joking but then one of the house helpers affirmed that Babe, that was her name, succumbed to her sickness and she just died.
I asked if they had buried her and they told me that not yet so I went out to see it for myself if my sweet, hyper electric puppy was really gone and there she was: lying motionless.
I asked her to forgive me for being so remiss. For being oblivious for those days that she was sick and I hadn't noticed a thing. When I thought that she was just tired of running too much.
By the time I had found out, it was too late and even though she fought for days, we took her to the vet, she was really bond to leave us.
And it hurts.
Even as I write this, with tears in soaking my face, it hurts. . . It hurts to remember the good times when she was so chubby and happy, the crazy times when she got into that habit of biting anything (including my clothes) and those meaningful times when I would go to her to pour my thoughts into her life and she would listen.
It hurts to think of all those ideas and plans I had for us, all the photoshoots I had planned for us and all the new things I wanted to teach her.
It hurts to have her gone, but what's shocking is that, somehow, I managed to smile while I was crying.
I managed to smile while I was asking God to take care of my sweet girl. Asking Him if dogs got to Heaven. (They do, right?)
It was weird that there were small windows of happiness, or bittersweetness, as I mourned her and that reminded me that, just how One Republic said, "I know that there will be better days,"
The thing is, maybe you haven't lost a puppy, but something has got you down. Probably in tears too. . .
Maybe there's this thing stealing away your peace and happiness, cluttering your mind and you just feel like clouds of distress and sadness are looming over you.
Well, regardless of how sad or hurtful you might be feeling, there's always a way of putting a smile on that pretty face of yours. . . Even if it is for just that golden moment.
Uh, what now?
I don't really know what it is about them but it makes me smile and believe more when I read about how God has brightened the lives of others in ways that are quite inspiring, emotional and even joyful.
For me, there's joy in seeing people being saved because I know how amazing it is to have a love story with God. I know how brilliant it is to have a strong bond with God and be able to trust Him with anything.
Even in putting a smile on my face.
Even if you are not used to reading about people's encounter with Jesus, give it a try and you might just feel joyful by just reading how God has managed to call many people to Him.
Listen to a Joke
It's really hard not to crack a smile or even a laugh when you hear a nice joke, right?
So do that, exactly.
Go to Comedy Central's Youtube Channel and find a comedian that that will brighten your mood. Or search her/him directly and crack a bunch of laughs.
I, personally, would search for Trevor Noah. He makes me laugh a lot.
Here are some of the Stand-ups he has gifted us with:
Listen and Dance To an Upbeat Song
There are just those songs that you cant's help but dance to and even if you suck, like majorly, it makes you feel super good to dance to it.
One of the songs that I like to dance to and actually sing along, it's Someone To You by BANNERS.
Remember the Awesome Days
I know you are probably sad and hurting, and that's probably why many are not witnessing that joy-inducing smile of yours.
BUT. . .
If only you can give yourself 30 seconds to remember the awesome days when it was hard not to smile, things would be a whole lot better.
Just give yourself, at the very least, 30 seconds to remember a day or a season that was filled with lots of joy, laughter and love and stay in that scenario for a little while, allowing yourself yo be immersed in those feelings, those memories.
Read the Scriptures
If things are failing, dreams are foggy, feelings are too many, dive into The Word.
When all fails and glooms, there's a book that will always be there for all occasions and that's the Bible.
There is someone who will always have a word for every occasion, every feeling, every single sorrow of yours and that's Jesus, and Jesus is The Word (John 1:1) and Jesus is The Light (John 1:4-5) and The Light shines away all darkness.
Go to the Bible and it will shine light into your dark mood.
I suggest you read confessions of love that Jesus proclaimed to us, even though the Bible can be seen as a love letter as well.
Here are some verses that show you just how much God loves you:
"For God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son so that everyone who believes in Him may not die but have eternal life." - John 3:16
"But God has shown us how much he loves us - it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us."- Romans 5:8.
"For I am certain that nothing can separate us from His love: neither death nor life, neither angels nor other heavenly rulers or powers, neither present nor the future." - Romans 8:38
Nothing or no one in this world or Heaven will separate you from God's love. He just loves you too much and I bet He wants to see you happy, smiling and I want that too.
Write a silly short-story
Feeling pretty down?
Well, write a silly and funny story, even if it is just about some inside joke between you and you.
You see, stories have the power to invoke certain emotions from us and I'm really trusting that writing some silly and comical story will make you laugh, or at least smile.
Here are 100 hilarious story prompts for you to explore. Knock yourself out.
Confess What's Bothering You to God
If you need to talk about what's bothering you and won't judge you, wrongfully, remember that you always have God by your side and He is more than ready to take your burdens from you (Psalms 55:22), to help you (Hebrews 13:6), and care for you and give you strength (Isaiah 41:10).
You don't need to pray for hours on end for Him to come to your rescue.
Just a simple prayer, a cry for help, comfort and strength will get Him already holding your hand (Isaiah 41:13) and strengthening you. God is faithful and loving, He will take care of you.
Confess to Him what's bothering and our God, the beautiful and amazing God, will take care of you.
He will get that smile back on your face.
Just trust Him to do so.
Be Around Good People
In times of hardship, of sorrow and sadness, it is super easy for us to want to isolate ourselves and stay where people won't see our shattered pieces but, we shouldn't do that.
Yes, sometimes it's really good to be alone and let yourself feel what you are feeling, make sense of it, try to understand it but, staying alone for too long is not really the key.
You should give yourself some time to be alone but also some time to be around people that make you feel amazing.
Sometimes, when I am down but around other people who are happy, joyful or just cracking jokes, I feel their emotions brushing in on me and, with some time (depending on how dark my mood really is), I start to feel just like they do, even if it is a tad bit.
Surround yourself with people that will make you smile, that will encourage you and brighten your day.
Don't be alone for too long.
Let other people make you smile.
